WTF: Escaflowne Cosplay
From Vision of Escaflowne, we've done a simple Van costume and
have replicated Hitomi's pendant in its series and movie versions.
Please click here for Pendant information.
(With the Van costume, a Dryden costume and a simple Dilandau
costume - as he's seen for only a few moments near the end of the
series - were also done, but they were
composed primarily of
bought pieces, so they're not detailed here).
Van
For the Van costume, we started with a bought pair of pants, gauntlets
that I'd acquired for a Darth Maul costume the year before, a re-cut and
re-styled Elvis wig (no, really), and a red T-Shirt. (I offered my husband
a pair of boots that more closely resembled Van's, but he opted for his
own comfortable sneakers, since he was wearing the costume at
Anime Expo
, where we'd be walking a lot.)
With a little cutting and hand-sewing on ribbon, the T-Shirt became more
Van-like.
The shirt alone would be $10-$15, depending on the price of the plain T-shirt.
We acquired a set of wings from a costume shop for this outfit.
Unlike most other winged Vans we'd seen, we decided to use outstretched
wings - these proved as unweildy in crowds as many wings, but did look
good... :-) However, the rental for the wings was $60, and it would have
been $130 to buy them. Had we had the time, we probably would've made
our own wings, but between materials and labor, the cost would probably
have been about the same as buying them. (Still, we hope one day to
create articulated feathered wings...) ;-)
The wings had wide elastic straps that connected with Velcro to go around
the shoulders. We decided that we didn't want these straps to show, so
we cut holes in the back of the shirt to thread the straps through. We then
sacrificed a pair of tube socks to make coverings for the straps, so that
they'd be comfortable enough to wear all day.
Lastly, for the Van costume, a Hitomi pendant was required. (In every image
we could find that showed Van with his wings out and his shirt on, he was
wearing the pendant.) At the time, we had no luck finding an appropriate
bead, so we used... a nice heavy solid-glass Christmas bulb pendant/ornament
that I had randomly acquired two years before (long before I'd ever seen
any Escaflowne). It was a little oddly shaped, but it looks just fine in the
pictures. :-)
But the quest for the perfect Hitomi Series Pendant bead continued!

Atlantis Drop
(Vision of Escaflowne - Hitomi's Pendant - Series Version)
The beads for these pendants that we've found comes in two varieties
- smooth oval or slightly bicone/ridged about the middle.
A smooth oval bead pendant appears below with reference pictures.
Below on the left is a picture of the pendant made with the smooth
oval bead (on the right) and of one made with the ridged/bicone bead
(on the left), accompanied by a quarter for scale.
On the right is an enlarged picture of a smooth oval bead pendant
to better show the delicate moon-and-star design on the bead caps.
Either kind would be $20.50 to buy
(first-class USPS shipping included;
Priority Mail shipping available for $2.50 more;
ask for international shipping).
If you'd like a 12 karat gold filled chain,
there will be an additional $20 charge.
(All chains, both regular and gold, are 24" long,
so that the pendant hangs similarly to Hitomi's in the anime.
Just let us know if you'd like a different length.)
Our supply of Atlantis Drop beads are running out,
and we can't find more, so get your pendant before we run out!
And now, we can make earrings to match these pendants, too!
They're made with real gold-plated posts
(and gold-tone base metal fittings, unless you specify otherwise).
If you'd like a pair, just let us know!
A pair of earrings is $6 when separate from a pendant
(USPS First Class shipping included/ask for international shipping),
or $5 when ordered at the same time as your pendant (combined shipping).
Goddess Drop
(Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaia - Hitomi's Pendant - Movie Version)
Our Escaflowne movie-inspired Goddess Drop pendants
are made from 2mm black rattail cord (20" long), base metal fittings,
and either a Czech glass, Cherry Quartz or Rose Quartz teardrop bead.
Below is one made with a red Czech glass teardrop bead,
followed by one with a pink Czech glass bead,
both with reference images and a US quarter for scale.
Movie Pendants with Czech glass beads sell for $12
($10 + $2 shipping - see above for more shipping info).
Please note that I've run very low on the pink Czech glass beads,
and my supplier has run out, too!
So, when I run out, I'll be using Cherry Quartz beads.
I've been told that Cherry Quartz is actually glass
infused with color so as to resemble smoky or rose quartz,
but in a darker pink color. These beads are the closest I've been
able to find to the pink color of Czech glass that I'm
running out of, but their color is non-unform, so they'll
look a bit different. Expect pictures soon.
(I'm going to keep looking for more of the pink
Czech glass beads, too.)
We can also make Movie pendants with semi-precious stone
beads; rose quartz is the most popular
(it looks like the movie pendant when it's glowing!). :-)
Movie Pendants with semi-precious stones
sell for $14 ($12 + $2 shipping).
We also have matching earrings for these pendants!
They're made with sterling silver posts and rings
(and silver-tone base metal fittings).
If you'd like a pair, just let us know!
A pair of earrings is $6 when separate from a pendant
(USPS First Class shipping included/ask for international shipping),
or $5 when ordered at the same time as your pendant (combined shipping).
