WTF: Sailor Moon Cosplay

The only Sailor Moon costume that we've done so far is for

one of the generals from the first season, namely Nephrite

(though we are at present working on Sailor Moon herself).

This costume was worn at Fanime 2002.

Our friend who wanted the costume already had great hair

for it, so we don't at present have a wig recommendation. We made

the uniform out of a dark gray polyester, with silky dark yellow

braid trim. (Of course, it doesn't help that no two pictures of

Nephrite agree on just how the trim is placed, but we did our best.)

The pants are of a simple, elastic-waist design.

The epaulets were first shaped with wire, then sculpted with

Crayola Model Magic, then layered with gloss varnish and tissue

paper to harden them a bit. The red centers of the epaulets

are actually a pair of vintage buttons. The epaulets are Velcro-

attatched, so that they can be removed when the

uniform is washed.

The button on the front of the uniform is just for show; beneath

it is a snap and velcro closure.

The gloves were bought at a costume shop, and the wearer used

his own belt and boot covers.

The Nephrite uniform - jacket, pants, gloves, and

removable epaulets - comes out to about $80. A different general

would probably cost the same or less.
